Twelve consecutive women with FHA were selected and received a single 45- to 70-minute session of hypnotherapy. The patients were observed for 12 weeks. They were asked whether or not menstruation resumed and whether or not well-being and self-confidence changed. Within the 12 weeks, 9 out of 12 patients (75%) resumed menstruation. all of the patients, including those who did not menstruate, reported several beneficial side effects such as increased general well-being and increased self-confidence. The authors concluded that hypnotherapy could be an efficacious and time-saving treatment option that also avoids the pitfalls of pharmacological modalities for women with FHA. Morgan D. (1996). The principles of hypnotherapy. Bradford UK: Eilidon Press. The book is divided into three parts. Part A consisting of 9 chapters covers foundational material on systems theory and how that can be applied to organic systems and to hypnosis. It discusses positive feedback loops that amplify the process and negative feedback loops that subdue the process. Positive feedback amplification can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether increasing the effect is desired, while negative feedback calming can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether decreasing the effect is desired. Morgan focuses on the activity of a system, the activity of its component subsystems, or the activity of the supersystem of which the system is a component. His main theoretical focus is on whether the activity of the system is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same, as other components change in specified ways. Hypnosis is described in systems terms, not as a “state,” but rather in terms of what system or subsystem components are changed, either increased or decreased, during trance induction, deepening, maintenance, trance work, and termination. He uses simple symbols to represent activities in quasi-mathematical style, which is helpful. Some of the letter symbols are used for different activities in different parts of the book. It would have been easier to follow if given letter symbols had been used more consistently to represent single specific activities. Some of his textual references to others publications are found in the bibliography at the end of the book, but some are unfortunately not present in the bibliography. He goes through common hypnotic tests in Chapter 8 and inductions in Chapter 9 explaining them in systems terms. This does produce some greater conceptual clarity with respect to subsystem component activities during hypnosis.

HypnotherapyHypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic intervention . The therapist leads the patient to positive change while the patient is deeply relaxed in a state of heightened suggestibility called trance.
In therapeutic interviews described as either hypnosis or biofeedback, the patient must change mental imagery to achieve the desired state or physiologic change. If the therapists monitors physiologic measures while coaching a patient through a self-hypnotic exercise, invariably there will be changes in measures (e.g., increased peripheral temperature, decreased pulse rate). Regardless of the confusion, the benefit of adding physiologic monitoring (biofeedback) to hypnosis is the enhancement of a sense of personal control and competency. Children recognize that by changing their thinking, they can impact body processes. This makes the experience more concrete and provides trance ratification and gives a child increased confidence about achieving the desired therapeutic outcome. The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first-ever prescription skin gel to treat osteoarthritis (OA) pain in the knees and hands. Voltaren Gel contains diclofenac sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) thats also found in oral Voltaren. The new gel cut pain levels in half among people with hand OA after six weeks of treatment, while a 12-week study of patients with knee OA who used the gel showed a 51 percent reduction in pain, according to studies cited by the manufacturer. The gel may be safer as its systemic absorption is 94 percent less than the comparable oral diclofenac treatment. The most common side effects (seven percent of patients) were skin reactions. The gel was not evaluated for use on joints of the spine, hip, or shoulder, according to the drugs label.

Utahs criminal libel law, which was struck down by the Utah Supreme Court five years ago because it was unconstitutional and overly broad, needs to be repealed. It would, admittedly, appear self-serving for a newspaper to advocate repealing a libel law. Our concern is on several levels, however.
It is the first function that is of interest to us here, the socalled ex ante function of the criminal law. The code announces in advance what actions count as criminal; thus the citizenry can use the announcement to guide their actions to avoid criminal conduct. The law, in other words, draws “bright lines” between allowable and unallowable conduct, and those lines enable the citizens to regulate their conduct so they do not break the laws. To use a familiar metaphor, the criminal law specifies what sorts of actions are “out of bounds,” and the penalties for those actions, so the players will “stay in bounds.” The criminal justice system relies on people knowing the law and knowing where the boundaries for their conduct lie. Ignorance does not excuse unlawful conduct, a fact summarized in the phrase “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” Such a rule is defended as a useful means of creating an incentive for citizens to learn the law.
One of the most significant changes in the last several years was the creation of a national DNA data bank containing the profiles of individuals convicted of the most serious criminal offences. In June 2000, legislation became effective which required convicted persons to provide blood or other bodily samples for the purposes of DNA data banking (the dates used in this article are usually those when the laws in question were brought into force even if they might from time to time be referred to as the dates of enactment). Now, persons convicted of the most serious offences–including murder, sexual offences, kidnapping, and various terrorism-related crimes–are required to provide samples from which their DNA may be extracted and then catalogued in a national data bank maintained by the RCMP in Ottawa. (Persons convicted of certain less serious offences may also be required to provide samples if a judge decides this is appropriate in the circumstances.) The information in the data bank is then used whenever DNA is found at a crime scene which cannot be identified as being that of a known offender, witness, or complainant. The unknown DNA can be compared to all of the samples in the data bank to determine whether someone previously convicted of an offence is somehow connected to the unsolved crime.

Officials at the air quality agency say the combined efforts will remove 18 tons of dust from the air every day plus nearly 8 tons of smog-forming emissions. Airborne dust is the most prominent air-quality problem in the Coachella Valley and smog emissions from the Inland area regularly drift into the desert. The dust rules for sand and gravel mining pits and processing facilities will go into effect in July and December this year, according to AQMD. If the overall dust reduction plan works as intended, it will help the Coachella Valley avert a federal crackdown on fugitive dust in 2006. The new system is expected to reduce emissions from the regions top industrial smog producers more than 20 percent. Alaska Diesel Electric, Seattle, Wash., has been building small heavy-duty marine and industrial generator sets since 1963. To meet increasing demands for high quality electrical output they have developed a new generator called the PXK line. This generator will first be featured in the new model M843JK gen-set rated 10 kW. A three-cylinder, water-cooled Lugger diesel drives the newly designed generator at 1800 rpm and the unit is also available at 8 kW for 1500 rpm, 50 Hz/240 V output.A key design objective was to increase performance without increasing generator set length. Alaska Diesel engineers reported that the new generator design has actually decreased overall generator set length in several configurations. For example, length of the 8 kW model has gone from 35.2 in. to 32.5 in.; the 12 kW set from 38.1 in. to 36.6 in.; and the 20 kW set from 47.7 in. to 43.4 in.

One of the most significant changes in the last several years was the creation of a national DNA data bank containing the profiles of individuals convicted of the most serious criminal offences. In June 2000, legislation became effective which required convicted persons to provide blood or other bodily samples for the purposes of DNA data banking (the dates used in this article are usually those when the laws in question were brought into force even if they might from time to time be referred to as the dates of enactment). Now, persons convicted of the most serious offences–including murder, sexual offences, kidnapping, and various terrorism-related crimes–are required to provide samples from which their DNA may be extracted and then catalogued in a national data bank maintained by the RCMP in Ottawa. (Persons convicted of certain less serious offences may also be required to provide samples if a judge decides this is appropriate in the circumstances.) The information in the data bank is then used whenever DNA is found at a crime scene which cannot be identified as being that of a known offender, witness, or complainant. The unknown DNA can be compared to all of the samples in the data bank to determine whether someone previously convicted of an offence is somehow connected to the unsolved crime.
